Learning to count is one of the first things most learners do in any language.

Welsh numbers have lots in common with other European languages; the number one is un just like in French, though of course the Welsh pronunciation is more like een. (Download a pronunciation guide here if you need a refresher Pronunciation Guide - Beginners ).

One of the challenges presented to learners is that Cymraeg has two systems of counting:

  • The traditional or traddodiadol system works on the basis of counting in scores, or twenties. We use it regularly for telling the time and the date and sometimes for larger numbers.
  • The modern system is more straightforward and easier to remember for the beginner and used for everyday counting. It’s also worth remembering that just because it’s a ‘modern’ system, it’s no less authentically Welsh.

Though the traditional system seems a bit illogical at times, it’s worth learning both if you can.

Remember you can become a member of Tyfu Cymraeg. In doing so you can leave messages and connect with other learners on the forum and be able to access a growing archive of resources to help you on your Welsh learning journey.
